Etymology

Alternate Names

Many names for MLM people have been suggested, although Achillean is by far the most common term.

  • Apollian, or Apollonian, was coined on or before 3/11/19 by Tumblr user that-sweet-sweet-validation in honor of the Greek and Roman deity Apollo, whose romantic involvement with a man named Hyacinthus is legendary. However, he later retracted this after finding out that Apollo was a rapist in mythology.
  • Wildean was coined to honor Oscar Wilde, a notable gay man, by Tumblr user gaypunching. This has been critiqued due to Wilde being antisemitic, as well as possibly pedophilic.
  • Chaeronian was coined to honor the Order of Chaeronea, which was started by a gay rights activist in 1897.
  • Hyacique (also spelled Hyacean), was coined by Tumblr users bijoumikhawal and halloweenz on 10/10/19 to honor Apollo's lover, Hyacinthus (misnamed in the coining post as "Hyacinth"). The coining post names the flower as the main source of inspiration, but the flower itself was named after the hero.
  • Ganymedic was coined on or before 6/13/16 to honor Ganymede, a man abducted by Zeus (or possibly a partner of Zeus) in Greek mythology.
  • Patroclean was coined on or before 6/13/16 to honor Patroclus, the lover of Achilles.
  • Sivanic was coined on or before 6/13/16 after singer and YouTuber Troye Sivan.
  • Tomic was coined on or before 6/13/16 after gay erotic artist Tom of Finland (also known as Touko Valio Laaksonen)
  • Vincic was coined on or before 6/13/16 to honor Leonardo da Vinci, who was often purported to be either a-spec or gay.
  • Vincian is sometimes used as an alternate word for Vincic, but is much more commonly used as the exclusive term for gay men.

History

The original Achillean flag was designed by Tumblr user pridenpositivity, along with the sapphic flag.

The symbolism of the achillean flag was originally stated with blue meaning "joy"; carnations being a reference to a common way for Victorian MLMs to signal to one another, as popularized by Oscar Wilde; and the green of the flower indicating "gay affiliations."
