Catgender is a popular xenogender. It was recoined as a neurogender for autistic and delusional people, but was originally coined as an umbrella term for genders related to cats in some fashion. Catgender people may identify as one or both versions.

History

It is unclear when exactly the original version of catgender was coined exactly. It has been claimed it was originally coined in 2015, but no source for this has been recovered[3]. There is a flag for it dating to 2019[1].

The neurogender definition seems to have appeared in 2019, contributed to by lokidni and hueningafton[4], the latter of which claimed to coin it. An alternative catgender flag was created by Twitter user EggHeggley on October 10, 2020 in response to the previous flag creator's exclusionary beliefs and false claims of being the original coiner of the term.[5] A combination of the hueningafton and EggHeggley flags was made by jellyjeepop on Jan 3rd, 2021[6]. Another alternate catgender flag was created by wiki user Snotdrips on January 12, 2021.

Controversy

  • As catgender is a particularly popular xenogender, it's been many people's first experience seeing xenogender labels. However, catgender is just as valid as other xenogenders.
  • The creator of the most popular flag (pink, purple, and blue with a purple cat face) is openly[7] stelliphobic.
