Familial Attraction

The familial attraction flag.

Familial Attraction is a form of tertiary attraction based on a desire for a strong familial attachment, or a desire for emotional closeness with another by virtue of them being family. This can refer to the relationship one has with their actual family, but it can also be the desire for emotional closeness from those unrelated to oneself in a way that that mimics a traditionally/idealized familial bond. This may be seen as a chosen family.[1]

History

It is unknown when this term was coined; however, it has been used in the community (specifically the a-spec community) for a good number of years.

Flag

The familial attraction flag was created by a user going by Alex on December 21, 2020. The black represents familial attraction unrelated to oneself, the light blue represents compassion, the medium blue represents loyalty, greyish-blue represents kindness, and dark blue represents memories. The raindrop shape is supposed to be a play on the 'blood is thicker than water' quote; however, the rainbow inside it represents diversity and how family is more than just DNA. The rainbow also represents familial bonds within the LGBTQIA+ community. The flag is made to be used only by familial bonds within the LGBTQIA+ community.
