Pupgender is a xenogender that is puppy-like, connected to puppies, and/or described as small, lively, cute and any other quality associated with puppies. It is sometimes used as an umbrella term for dog-associated genders.

Etymology

The term comes from the root word puppy, suffixed by the popular gender suffix -gender.

History

Pupgender was originally coined in a list of baby animal themed genders by Tumblr user xeno-aligned on April 17, 2019.[2]

Twitter user kandipaws posted their flag on Twitter on March 16th, 2020.[4] Tumblr user viraldoll posted their flag design on May 3rd[3], nbgender posted a design on July 19th[5], and Tumblr user neopronouns posted a flag design on November 9th, 2020.[3]

Statistics

There is one example of canon pupgender representation in MOGAI Stories Anthology. Iris, a character from the story, is stated to be pupgender.[6]

Controversy

As pupgender is a particularly popular xenogender, it has been many people's first experience seeing xenogender labels, which may cause the term to be insulted and mocked.
