The original and most widely known Sapphic flag was created by tumblr user Lesbeux-Moved on August 14, 2015.[2] The Sapphic flag has two pink stripes on the top and bottom, symbolizing love. In the center there is a realistic pair of violets, which was historically given between women to symbolize their Sapphic love.
As a response to the difficulty of replicating the violets in the center, tumblr user Pride-Color-Schemes simplified the flag and created the modern sapphic flag on June 25, 2017.[3]
An alternate Sapphic flag was posted by Twitter user GayBreakfast on February 17, 2021.[4] The flag was made to include the vast array of folks in the Sapphic community, aiming to be a more inclusive flag. It drew inspiration from the Sapphic Lesbian flag that was made by tumblr user Kispesan, particularly the flag's reference to Sappho's poetry.[5]
