An Umbrella Term is a term for a group of ideas that have something in common. In the context of MOGAI, an umbrella term usually means a term that covers a group of sexuality or gender identity labels that have something in common.

MOGAI, transgender, and nonbinary are some common umbrella terms. Some umbrella terms themselves fall under umbrella terms. An example is demispec, which is an umbrella term that falls under the umbrella term of aspec.

An individual could identify as one of the specific identities under an umbrella term, or they could identify with the umbrella term itself if it applies.
